Injury recovery and pain management
By Beverly Osachoff, RTCMP
Acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicines are highly effective for injuries
of all types. Sprains, strains, bruises, burns, tears, fractures, and even
concussions heal quicker with the help of herbs and acupuncture.
Herbal medicines can minimize scar tissue development or promote bone growth
or granulation - the process of healing up sores or abrasions. Herbs may be
given to improve microcirculation, promote immune system function, clear
infections, or improve sleep so your body can get the rest required to heal
itself.
Acupuncture reduces inflammation and pain, assisting the body in its own
innate healing processes. It effectively relieves pain of all types and
increases microcirculation, which in turn improves strength and range of
motion. The tiny needles are placed at various locations on the body,
sometimes at the site of the injury or at more remote locations if the
injured area is too painful or happens to be covered by bandages or a cast.
If you are recovering from surgery or have been taking medications,
acupuncture may be used to assist your liver and kidneys to "de-tox" and
eliminate the aftermath of your ordeal.
Professional athletes use acupuncture because they need to heal quickly and
get back to their game - downtime is expensive! Many of our clients use
acupuncture regularly to help them maintain good energy, increase mental
alertness, and generally stay on top of their game - no matter what that
might be.
We routinely work with other healthcare practitioners involved in your care
such as MDs, physiotherapists, chiropractors, osteopaths, etc. Mindful
collaboration ensures that there are no potential conflicts with medications
and that we all work together in a coordinated manner so you get the best
possible care for your particular injury. Please bring any reports from
x-rays, CT scans, MRIs, or blood work as well as any medications you are
taking to your first acupuncture appointment.
